a bit of history...

The earliest cartographic evidence depicting Doyle’s Woollen stores dates to the mid 19th century. The First Edition Ordnance Survey Map of 1848 illustrates a street-facing terrace of buildings which expand at the rear in a rectangular formation.

By the early 20th century the site has developed extensively incorporating a series of structures to the southern boundary of the complex and also to the internal courtyard. Access to the site is gained through an integral carriage arch leading from the main street. This is part of the adjoining streetscape terrace. The buildings positioned beside the river are illustrated on the 1902 map as a pair of substantial structures with a small square building jutting from the northeast-facing elevation.

The building known as Doyle’s Grocery contains an outbuilding immediately to the rear of the house and shop with two rectangular structures extending from the earlier 1800’s building.
